Tess

After a personal experience of kind, compassionate, and encouraging midwifery care during my second pregnancy and birth – a stark contrast to the ‘sausage factory’ experience with my first – the midwifery seed was planted in my mind. It took a while to germinate, but whilst waiting for my children to be big enough for me to start midwife training, I immersed myself as much as possible in the world of birth: I trained and taught antenatal classes for the NCT, became a Michel Odent trained Doula and helped run a local homebirth group until I was able to start my midwife training and qualify so I could proudly call myself ‘Registered Midwife’.

Initially I worked in the NHS in all areas of maternity, including high-risk pregnancies on the labour ward, medicalised births (including epidurals and Caesareans), water births in a midwife-led unit, home births, and antenatal and postnatal care in the community, but I wasn’t able to give women the time and care I felt they deserved.

Your Neighbourhood Midwives - Tess McLeish

I left the NHS in 2018 and have been a private midwife ever since. I love the independence that private midwifery gives me to be a midwife for YOU – not for the system. I love being able to focus fully on the women I care for – to ensure they have all the information they need to make the choices that are right for them and their baby; to ensure they are aware of ALL their options at every stage and that everything that can be done to smooth their path to parenthood HAS been done.

I enjoy developing the strong ties of trust, respect and warmth that our work necessitates. I am very aware that labour, birth and the early weeks with baby can sometimes be a tricky time and am happy to walk alongside you, holding your hand and helping you negotiate your way through the minefields. As long as you have all the information you need and are happy with your choices there will be no judgements from me. I aim to have your back and provide a safe space for you and your family to find your own way as you grow together.

On a personal note: I enjoy reading, gardening (particularly micro-orchards), real fires and winter weather – mist, frost, snow – I’m there. And when I say ‘there’ I mean by the fire with a book…
